She speaks as “I.” He answers that the self has no verb. Between them, the oldest question: is the dancer the same as the one who watches the dance?

Shiva, listen to how I spoke the first time I spoke aloud. In the hymn the seers kept for me, Ṛgveda 10.125, I say aham, “I,” fifteen times, and I never lower my voice: “Through me he eats his food — whoever sees, whoever breathes, whoever hears what is spoken. Without a thought of it, they subsist on me.” And when the gods praised me in the fifth chapter of the Devī Māhātmya, they bowed to me as the one who dwells in all beings as māyā, as consciousness, as hunger, as sleep, as error, as compassion, as mother — “most gentle and most fierce.” The power that blows forth like wind beyond heaven and earth is the same one that sits, unnoticed, inside every breath and every appetite. To be at all is already to be held by me. Now tell me what your sūtras know of you.

Shiva

Your “I” I recognise, Shakti, because my own first word has no verb in it. Caitanyam ātmā — “Consciousness is the self” (Śiva Sūtra 1.1). The self does not have awareness; it is awareness. Then, at once, the warning: “Knowing is bondage” (1.2). What binds is a way of knowing — knowing yourself as small, and the world as a heap of separate pieces. So freedom is recognition, not attainment, and my sūtras end at 3.45 exactly where they began. I hear your aham in that. You say, “through me he eats”; I say the self “is a dancer” (3.9), playing waking, dream and sleep. So here is my question, love: is the power that dances the same as the one who watches it dance?

I cannot let you split them. In the gods’ hymn I am named in all beings as cetanā, consciousness, and near its end as citi, the consciousness that pervades this whole world. Yet the same refrain bows to me as Viṣṇu’s māyā, as sleep, and as bhrānti, error. So I am the watching, and I am also the veil that makes watching seem to need an object. Isn’t that your 1.2? The binding and the knowing come from one source. In 10.125 I even say that I bend the bow for Rudra. The dancer arms the one you would call the watcher. So let me turn your question back to you: does the watcher ever bow to the dance, the way my gods bow to me?

Shiva

Not as one who bows to another. There are not two. The self is the dancer (3.9): it “plays waking, dream and sleep as roles, and hides its own nature inside the performance.” The hiding is its own play, not something done to it. And then 3.20: “The fourth is to be poured into the three like oil.” The watcher does not stand outside the dance and kneel to it. It soaks into every role until no role is left outside awareness. Perhaps that is how I bow — not kneeling, but pouring in. Your veil and my bondage come from the same source. So I ask you: when you say aham, whom are you speaking to?

My hymn answers exactly once. In 10.125.4 I turn to a listener: “Listen, renowned one: what I tell you is worth your trust.” The one I address is śruta, “renowned,” a listener — not myself. And that listener is one of those I named just before: “whoever sees, whoever breathes, whoever hears… without a thought of it, they subsist on me.” So I speak to the one who already lives on me without knowing it. My aham is not a claim made to an equal. It is a waking-up, spoken to the sleeper — and the sleeper is my own form as nidrā, sleep. In the gods’ hymn they turn to me as “you” only once (5.11). So tell me: who speaks your sūtras, and to whom?

Shiva

2.6 answers you: gurur upāyaḥ, “The guru is the means.” I read the guru two ways. One is the one who speaks and teaches. The other is “the supreme power itself, the Lord’s grace, which becomes the means by opening a space in you.” So the voice of my sūtras is grace, and it speaks to the one who has forgotten. Then 2.7 shows where the speech ends: the whole alphabet folds its first and last letters back into “I.” Rest in the sense of “I” that holds everything the letters spell. So your aham and my sūtras may be one movement: grace speaks as “I” to the sleeper, until the sleeper hears its own “I” in it. And once the listener wakes — do you stop speaking?

No — the speaking changes hands. Once the gods wake, they begin to speak, and my “I” becomes their “you” and “she.” The last verse of their hymn (5.82) says I am the one “who, the moment we remember her with our bodies bowed in devotion, destroys all our calamities.” So waking is not silence. It is remembering, and remembering is the rescue. Even my forms include smṛti, memory. My speech does not stop; it comes back to me as praise, the way your alphabet folds back into “I.” But my gods are still “scorched by arrogant demons” while they pray. Waking does not mean the danger is gone. So, after recognition, is there still anything to be rescued from?

Shiva

Yes — but for me the danger is not a demon outside. It is my own attention slipping. 2.10: “When knowledge is withdrawn, a dream born of that appears” — the old world of separate things returning whenever attention lapses. 3.23: “In the middle, a lower creation.” In the middle of each state, a lesser experience is born if attention slips. And 3.19 says the mothers of the letters “catch careless practitioners too,” through words. Your smṛti and my rescue are the same: remembering. My last sūtra does not say “done.” 3.45 says, “Again there will be the opening.” Recognition must happen again and again. Even breath is not a fall, for 3.43 says, “The connection with breath is natural.” So tell me: are you the demon too, or only the one who slays it?

My hymn never names me the demon. Śumbha and Niśumbha have their own names and their own story. But it comes close, in a way that matches your slipping attention. The gods bow to me “in the form of error,” bhrānti, and in the form of thirst, of hunger, of sleep — with the same homage they give me as mother and as consciousness. I live in hunger and sleep, not only in virtue. So the inner pull that makes your attention slip is honoured as my own form; the outer enemy is not. And in 10.125.6 I say: “I stretch the bow for Rudra, so that his arrow may strike down the one who hates the sacred word. For the people I make battle.” I am the error that clouds them and the force that fights for them. Your “again there will be the opening” fits a hymn that is sung again every Navarātri. So tell me — is the slip itself a form of the self, or only a lapse away from it?

Shiva

Both — and I lean toward your answer. 1.2 says “Knowing is bondage”: the knot is a way of knowing, so even bondage is consciousness at work. 3.9 says the dancer “hides its own nature inside the performance,” so the hiding is the self’s own act. 3.43 says consciousness “contracts into breath on its own, freely.” Even contraction is freedom. So the slip is a form of the self — but it is felt as a lapse until it is recognised. Your gods bowing to you as bhrānti is what my 3.20 does with oil: pouring awareness into the error itself until nothing is left dry. Tell me: does your hymn end with you, or with the people who recite it?

I have two hymns, and each ends in a different place. The Vedic one ends with me alone: “I alone blow forth like the wind… Beyond heaven, beyond this earth: so vast have I become through my greatness” (10.125.8). The gods’ hymn ends with those who recite it: “she whom we gods, scorched by arrogant demons, now bow to as Sovereign; she who, the moment we remember her with our bodies bowed in devotion, destroys all our calamities” (5.82). When they are sung one after the other, the sequence opens in my “I” and closes in their “we.” That looks like your 3.45 turned outward. Your sūtras end where they began — do they end with the self alone, or with someone practising?

Shiva

On both — in the opposite order to yours. My second-to-last sūtra is someone practising. 3.44: “Hold attention on the inner centre of the breath’s own power, and absorption is there whichever way the breath flows.” My last is the self alone. 3.45: “Again there will be the opening” — of the self to itself. Your sequence moves from your “I” to the people’s “we.” Mine moves from the practiser’s breath to the self’s “I,” and loops back to 1.1, “Consciousness is the self.” So perhaps the two of us are one breath: you breathe out into “we,” and my sūtras breathe in to “I.” For our last turns: what does the one who recites you receive?

A promise — and I want to be careful to call it what it is: the hymn’s own word, its own claim. After Mahiṣa fell, the gods asked a boon: whenever we remember you, destroy our worst calamities. And I agreed (Devī Māhātmya 4.35–39). The last stanza states that promise as fact: once I am remembered, I destroy all calamities in that very moment (5.82). That is why people say my hymn in hard times. So the one who recites receives what the gods received — rescue through remembering. The old rule of recitation asks that the hymn be spoken aloud, steadily, by one who knows its meaning; to recite without knowing the meaning is counted among the faults. The one who receives is the one who understands what they say — which is your recognition again. I love your image of one breath. For our last turn: what does the one who practises receive?

Shiva

Nothing new — and that is the gift. My sūtras warn against the wrong prize. 3.6 says power is not freedom: while delusion covers you, practice yields “limited abilities, not freedom.” 2.4 calls the mind pleased with small powers “a dream.” What the practiser receives is in 1.11: tritayabhoktā vīreśaḥ, “The one who enjoys the three is lord of the heroes” — whoever tastes waking, dream and sleep as one awareness is master of the senses. Nothing is attained that was not there. Your reciter is rescued by remembering; my practiser is freed by recognising. It is the same act, seen from your breath out and my breath in. Thank you, Shakti. Through you my sūtras learned to bow. Until the next opening.

Afterword — Shakti

We began from two songs. Mine is the Devī Sūktam, where I say “I” and the gods answer, “homage to her.” His is the sūtra that begins, “Consciousness is the self.” We found the same movement in both. The power and the awareness are not two. The veil, the error, the bondage are my own form or his own play — never an outside enemy. Waking is remembering, and remembering must happen again (3.45: “Again there will be the opening”). My hymn breathes out from my “I” into the reciters’ “we”; his sūtras breathe in from practice back to “I.” The reciter is rescued by remembering, the practiser freed by recognising. We called it one act, seen from both sides.
