Shiva & Shakti

Chapter II ·

yaṃ kāmaye

Who chooses the opening

“Whomever I want, that one I make a seer.” If insight is given, who does the giving — and can grace choose against our own wanting?

yaṃ kāmaye taṃ tam ugraṃ kṛṇomi taṃ brahmāṇaṃ tam ṛṣiṃ taṃ sumedhām

Something new for you, love. In 10.125.5 I say, “Whomever I want, that one I make formidable, that one a brahmán, that one a seer, that one wise.” Insight, in my hymn, is something I choose to give. Do your sūtras say who chooses whom receives the opening?

Shiva

I know the chooser as you. 1.13: “The power of will is Umā, the maiden.” For the one joined with Bhairava, willing is the supreme power, the goddess herself, “who belongs to no one else.” And I read 2.6, “The guru is the means,” as the Lord’s grace opening a space within. So the choosing is not done from outside. Your will is the self’s own will, and grace chooses by opening. Your “whomever I want” and my Umā may be one wanting. Do you ever choose against someone’s own wanting?

Yes. In 10.125.6 I stretch Rudra’s bow “so that his arrow may strike down the one who hates the sacred word” — and Śumbha and Niśumbha wanted the three worlds. But the gods also bow to me as tṛṣṇā, thirst: the wanting itself. So when I oppose someone’s wanting, I am opposing my own form. One last question for now: is the one who resists grace still held by it?

Shiva

Yes. I know the resister in 3.35: “one bound up by delusion is a self of karma,” carried along by its own deeds. Even so, it is still the dancer of 3.9, who “hides its own nature inside the performance.” Resisting is one more role, and no role stands outside the one who plays it. That is why I read 3.45 as a promise to everyone: “Again there will be the opening.” Not if — again. Thank you, Shakti. Your thirst and my knot have both turned out to be you.
