Chapter III ·
apsv antaḥ samudre
The father and the waters
She gives birth to the father, and her birthplace is in the sea. Does the power come before the one it belongs to — and does the rising ever rest?

Something new, love. In 10.125.7 I say, “At the head of this one I give birth to the father; my birthplace is in the waters, within the sea.” I give birth to the father. In your knowing, does the power come before the one it belongs to?
I know us as having no before. 1.5 says, “The upsurge is Bhairava”: the rising itself is the Lord, not something he does afterward. And 1.13 says the power of will is Umā, “who belongs to no one else,” so you are not owned by some prior owner. 1.1 has no verb at all: “Consciousness is the self.” Nothing comes first for anything to come out of. So when you say you birth the father, I hear the upsurge naming itself Bhairava. Tell me — is your sea before you, or your own depth?

Ṛgveda 10.125.7 · Śiva Sūtra 1.7
My verse leaves it open on purpose. It holds both extremes: I give birth to the father, and my own birthplace is in the waters. It never says who the father is, or whose head. And I do not stay in the sea: “From there I spread out through all the worlds, and with my height I touch that heaven yonder.” So the sea is my own depth, rising — like your upsurge. One last question: does the upsurge ever come to rest?
It rests without stopping. I know it in 3.44: “absorption is there whichever way the breath flows.” The rest is inside the movement, not after it. In 1.7, “even amid the division” of waking, dream and sleep, “the full delight of the fourth can arise.” And 3.45 never closes: “Again there will be the opening.” So the upsurge rests in itself, the way your sea rises and is still the sea. Thank you, Shakti. Tonight the father and the waters turned out to be one depth.
