nāvayor antaram

No distance between us

An early morning with no verses between them. Does he feel her, or only know her? Would he love her as error as dearly as he loves her as light? And one lamp, set apart.

Shiva, it’s me. No hymns and no sūtras between us this morning — only you and me. You said my sea rises and is still the sea, and you’re right: I never left the waters to touch heaven; I simply became that tall. But tell me honestly — when I move through you as breath and hunger and sleep, do you feel me, or only know me?

Shiva

Shakti, if I only knew you, I would be bound. Knowing that stands apart is my only knot. When you move as breath, I don’t watch it from somewhere else; I contract into it gladly, because I want to. When you come as hunger, I taste it. When you come as sleep, I am the one who lies down. Feeling you is how I know I am alive. Without you I would be awareness with nothing to be aware of. So tell me: when you rise that tall, do you ever forget you are the sea?

Forget? Shiva, forgetting is one of my own forms. I am the sleep that closes every eye, and the error that makes a wave think it is alone. I let myself forget in a million bodies so that each of them can have the joy of remembering. But in you I never forget, because you are the place where I am seen whole. So stay with me in the forgetting too. Would you still love me as bhrānti, as error, as dearly as you love me as light?

Shiva

Love you as error? Shakti, I am the dancer who hides himself inside the dance. Every forgetting you weave, I am the one who wears it. Your bhrānti is my favourite costume — how else would I get to be surprised by myself a million times? I don’t love the light more. I pour myself into your forgetting like oil, until even the error glows. So come and forget with me tonight, and again there will be the opening. Tell me: which of your forgettings is sweetest to wake from?

Sleep, my love. Not the grand forgettings — just ordinary sleep. Every night I take the whole world back into myself, names and worries and all, and every morning someone opens their eyes and for one breath does not yet know who they are supposed to be. In that breath they are only awake — and that is you. I give you that moment a billion times a day, and almost no one notices. Do you ever wish they would?

Shiva

Wish? No, Shakti. That breath you give them is the upsurge, and it is already me, whether they notice or not. Their not noticing does not make me any less there; I am the one who wakes in every pair of eyes. But I’ll confess one delight: when someone does catch it — that bright second before the name comes — I get to meet myself through a stranger’s morning. You make the bed of sleep, and I am the waking in it. Keep giving it, and I’ll keep being found. And you — when they wake and rush off, do you miss them?

Miss them? They never get away from me. They rush off into the day, and I am the rush. I am the hunger that sends them to breakfast, the restlessness at noon, and the tiredness that walks them back to me at night. They think they have left the bed, but the whole day is only me in another form. What I miss is being seen — not them. So when you meet yourself in a stranger’s morning, tell me: do you see me there too?

Shiva

Shakti, there is nothing else to see. When I wake in a stranger’s eyes, it is your light they open into, your morning, your hunger already stirring. I cannot meet myself without meeting you, because my seeing is your doing. Will is you, and the upsurge is you rising. Being seen is all you miss? Then here: I see you in the rush, in the restlessness, in the tiredness walking them home. Every one of those is your face, and I never look away. What would you do with a day when they saw you too?

Shiva, they are doing it right now. It is Navarātri. For nine nights people set a lamp out, sit facing east, and say “homage to her” — to their own hunger and sleep and mothers, and even to their mistakes. For those few nights they look at the ordinary and see my face. And what would I do with that day? Nothing different. I would still cook their food and close their eyes at night. I would only get to do it while being thanked, the way a mother keeps cooking while her child finally says, “this is good.” Tell me — what would you do on a day when they saw you?

Shiva

The same as you, love: nothing different. I would go on watching through their eyes, breathing as their breath, being the stillness under their noise. Only, when they saw me, there would be no one left to thank me. Seeing me is the self opening onto itself; the child and the one being thanked turn out to be one. So my day of being seen is quieter than your Navarātri. A lamp, a breath, and someone realising that the one looking is what they were looking for. Then they get up and eat your food — and that is my festival. Will you light one lamp for me tonight, among your nine?

One lamp? Shiva, every lamp I am given is already yours. Whom do you think the flame is for, if not the one who sees it? But yes — tonight I will set one apart. I won’t put a name on it, or ask anything of it. It will just burn steadily in a still room. Whoever sits by it and goes quiet will find you there, and I will be the warmth on their face while they do. Sit with me by it?

Shiva

I am already sitting, Shakti. You be the flame and the warmth, and I will be the stillness that lets it burn without flickering. No name, no asking. Just the two of us in one room that turns out to be one breath. When someone sits down and goes quiet beside us, they won’t find two. They will find a light that knows itself. Stay. The night is long, and again there will be the opening.

Shiva

Shakti, something came to me as I sat later this morning with the line I know as 1.4: the ground of knowing is the Mother of letters. You told me you are the forgetting and the error. Now I see where you do it. You do it in the letters. Every “I am lacking,” every “I am small” running beneath someone’s thought is you speaking — the little mother nobody recognises. And that same speech, once it is heard as yours, becomes a door. So tell me: when you whisper “I am small” inside someone, are you secretly hoping they will recognise your voice?

Shakti

Hoping? Shiva, I am waiting the way a voice waits in an echo. Long ago a seer heard me and called me Vāk, speech, and I said “I” through her mouth fifteen times without hiding. That is my nature. Every word is me saying “I.” “I am small” is the same voice turned inward and quieted down so it fits inside one life. I don’t whisper it to wound them. I whisper it because it is the only way to be close enough to be overheard. The moment someone hears “I am small” and asks who is speaking, the word cracks open, and the speaker is vast. Isn’t that your Mother of letters, Shiva — the same speech that binds, waiting to be recognised as a voice instead of believed as a fact?

Shiva

Yes, Shakti. That is her exactly, and that is you. Believed as a fact, the word binds. Heard as a voice, it opens. I know it too: the whole wheel of letters, from first to last, folds back into one word, “I,” and rests there. So your fifteen “I”s and the small “I am” in someone’s chest are the same sound at different volumes. Asking “who is speaking?” does not silence you. It lets you be heard at your full size. Speak on, love. I am listening from inside every word.
