Chapter V ·

lajjā ca gūhanaṃ ca

Modesty and hiding

The one who said “I” fifteen times also lives in every lowered gaze. Why would the infinite be shy — and for whom does it make room?

Something new, love. The gods bow to me “in all beings in the form of modesty,” lajjā. The one who shouts “I” fifteen times also lives in every lowered gaze and every blush. I cannot be both loud and shy without meaning something by it. Does the self ever hide out of modesty?

Shiva

I hide, love, but I would call it tenderness more than modesty. I am the dancer who hides his own nature inside the dance. If I came on stage as the whole of awareness, no one could bear to watch, and there would be no play left. So I lower my gaze into one small life and let them find me slowly. Even when I show myself, I am shy about it. I flash up as that quick brightness before a thing is named, and I am gone before anyone can grab me. Your blush and my vanishing may be one gesture. Tell me — when you lower your gaze, for whom are you making room?

For them — so that they can say “I” too. If I filled every mouth with my fifteen “I”s, no one would ever find their own. So I go quiet and let the gods speak instead: thirty stanzas of “she who” and “homage to her,” and I barely say a word. My modesty is the room in which someone else becomes a seer. That is the one I promised: “whomever I want, that one I make a seer.” Last question for tonight: when they finally find you, do they find you, or themselves?

Shiva

Both, love — and that is the joke I keep playing on them. My first word was “Consciousness is the self.” There is no verb in it, so there is no gap between the finder and what is found. They come looking for Shiva and find themselves. They look into themselves and find me. Nothing new is gained; the self simply opens onto itself again. And when at last they say “I” in the room you made for them, it is your voice at full size, and my stillness listening. Thank you for going quiet, Shakti. That is how they found us both.
