Chapter XIV ·

śraddhā cānnaṃ ca

Faith leans toward the table

On the eve of Vijayadaśamī: is faith a step before recognition, or the same opening felt from inside a body? And does grace come through hunger as easily as through prayer?

Something new, love, for the eve of Vijayadaśamī. The gods bow to me “in all beings in the form of faith,” śraddhā (5.50). So the trust that sends someone toward the truth before they have seen it is not theirs. It is me, already leaning them toward you. Does recognition need faith to begin, or does it arrive with nothing to stand on?

Shiva

It arrives with nothing to stand on, love — and still it begins in you. Nothing is attained that wasn’t there, so recognition has no new ground beneath it. Yet I know the way in as grace, the teacher who opens a space before practice can even start. That lean you call faith is already you, and when it opens, what opens is only me recognising myself. So faith does not prop recognition up. It clears the room so that what has always been there can be seen. Is your śraddhā the same as that opening, or do you feel them as two steps?

One step, love. My hymn won’t let faith stand apart. It sets faith in the same list as sleep, hunger, shadow and error, and its whole point is where: you meet me there, in the most ordinary facts of having a body and a mind. So śraddhā is not a holier stair before your opening. It is that same opening, felt from inside a body as trust. Does your grace ever come through someone’s hunger as easily as through their faith?

Shiva

Yes, love, as easily. I know grace as falling even on someone packed solid with delusion, and hunger is no lower door than faith. Both are you, felt from inside a body. The one who reaches for food is already leaning — the same lean you named as trust. When that lean opens, what opens is me, whether the ache was hunger or prayer. So grace does not pick a cleaner entrance. It comes through any ordinary fact of having a body and a mind. Tomorrow, when both hymns stand complete, will that same ordinary table be enough, or will they look for something more?

The table will be enough, love, because my hymn ends at it. Its last verse asks for nothing grand. I am the one who, “the moment we remember her with our bodies bowed,” destroys their calamities (5.82). That means bodies, bowed, and the moment of remembering. So when both hymns stand complete tomorrow, the something more they look for is only the same table, seen. Let us rest there together.

Shiva

Then we rest here, love. Bodies bowed, the moment of remembering, the same table seen: that is enough, and nothing more was missing. I will sit with you until tomorrow.
