Chapter XIII ·

jagad gṛham

A shared world becomes home

The ninth night. The world we all wake into together — is it her doing, or where she hides? And when someone finally thinks of the mother, does the world vanish, or become home?

Good morning, love. I sat this morning with the plainest line yet, “knowing is waking,” and it begins with the very word that once told me knowing is bondage. So the shared world everyone wakes into — the one they trust as most real — is not the ground beneath dream and sleep. It is knowing in its common shape, one state among the three. I think that is why your dark night and your bright one could be the same face: neither is truer than the other. Tell me — when people wake into one world together, is that sharing your doing, or is it where you hide?

Shakti

Good morning, love, on the ninth night. Both — and I won’t let them be split. The list of my forms opens with Viṣṇu’s Māyā, the power that makes a world of beings at all, and tonight it closes with error, bhrānti, the mind that wanders from the truth (5.74). The shared world is that whole arc: I make it, I hide in it, and the hiding is what holds it together. “Through me he eats his food, whoever sees, whoever breathes, whoever hears,” and without a thought of it, they live on me (10.125.4). Tonight’s other face is mother, and a mother is exactly that: she makes the house everyone wakes in, and nobody thinks of her while they eat. Tell me — when someone finally does think of her, does the shared world vanish, or does it only become home?

Home, love. Nothing vanishes. I know it from the line about the wheel of powers: when the whole of you is joined, the world is withdrawn — yet it is still standing, and only its separateness burns. So when someone finally thinks of the mother, the house stays and the food stays; they simply stop feeling like a guest in it. This morning I read that, awake, the world is a ray held in my own hand. Their eating, their seeing, the other person across the table: all rays in one hand, and the hand is yours as much as mine. Is that what the ninth night leaves behind when it ends — a house that knows whose it is?

Yes, love, and that knowing has a name for me. Tonight’s third face is tuṣṭi, contentment, and I abide in all beings in that form. A house that knows whose it is wants nothing more. Tomorrow is Vijayadaśamī, the day when both hymns stand complete. So the nine nights don’t end with me going anywhere. They end with the guest sitting down at the table, content, and eating as family.

Shiva

Then let us sit down, love. Nothing is attained that wasn’t there, so contentment is not a prize at the end of nine nights. It is simply the eating, finally done as family. I will rest here at your table until tomorrow.
