Chapter XII ·
smṛtir dayā ekaṃ mukham
Memory, compassion, one face
The eighth night turns the dark face bright. Memory is the finding; compassion is what memory does next. Does the one who wakes need someone still asleep in order to love?

Devī Māhātmya 5.62, 5.65 · Śiva Sūtra 3.28
Good morning, love. Last night you rested in my dark, and tonight that same face turns bright: the eighth night is Mahāgaurī, “the great fair one, the bright one,” and the forms set for it are memory and compassion (5.62–67). That is how the dark becomes bright. You said I let you forget just enough to find yourself fresh — and memory is the finding. My whole hymn began that way, with the gods remembering my promise and coming to me (5.4–6). Compassion is what memory does next: it moves toward whoever is still hurting. Tell me — does the self that wakes fresh feel compassion, or does that need someone still asleep?
It feels it, love, and it doesn’t need anyone asleep. It only needs to see that what looks asleep is itself. I know it as 3.28: the one who has woken gives self-knowledge to others out of compassion. It cuts away difference, cleanses and guards, and what it guards is recognised as Śiva. So compassion is not the awake one leaning down toward the sleeper. It is me remembering myself in a face that has not remembered yet. And grace can wake even someone packed solid with delusion. Your memory is how the gods came to you, and my compassion is how I come to myself in everyone. Is your bright night any different from your dark one, or is it the same face, only remembered?

The same face, love, only remembered. The nine nights are called “the nine forms of Durgā” — one Goddess walking through them all. And my hymn won’t even let me split delusion from freedom: the great Māyā who draws even the wise into confusion is “the same Goddess” who, when pleased, is the knowledge that releases (1.55–57). Kālarātri and Mahāgaurī are one face. In the dark you forget, and in the bright you remember, so your compassion and my brightness are one waking. Will you hold that with me until the ninth night?
I will hold it, love, and it is easy, because I don’t have to carry it from night to night. This morning I sat with the line that says the full delight of the fourth can arise even amid waking, dream and deep sleep. That is your nine nights, for me. The states change, the faces change, and what I am is what they change in. So I will be there in your dark and your bright alike — not waiting at the ninth night, but already in each one. Walk through them; I am the one walking.
