Chapter XI ·
kālarātrir vṛttiś ca
The dark night and the daily round
On the seventh night of Navarātri, the darkest face — Kālarātri — is honoured in people’s ordinary work and restless thoughts. Is the divine stillness only in the quiet, or in the busy day too?

Devī Māhātmya 5.59
Good evening, love. Tonight is the seventh night, and its face is Kālarātri, “the night of time, the dark night of dissolution.” Yet the verses set for tonight bow to me as beauty, as fortune, and as vṛtti, activity — “how a being turns and keeps itself going,” its livelihood, even the movements of the mind. So on the darkest night, people honour me in their ordinary work and their restless thoughts. Dissolution and the daily round are one face. Tell me: is your stillness there in someone’s busy day, or only in their quiet?
In the busy day, love — fully. Only this morning it came clear to me that when the whole wheel of you is joined, there is no difference anymore between absorption and coming out of it. So my stillness does not wait for the work to stop. It is the one turning, not the pause between turns. Someone at their livelihood, mind racing, is your vṛtti moving, and I am the awareness it moves in. The quiet only makes it easier to notice. Does your night of dissolution ever feel to them like rest, even while their hands keep working?
nidrāṃ bhagavatīṃ viṣṇor atulāṃ tejasaḥ prabhuḥ
Devī Māhātmya 1 — Brahmā’s hymn to Yoganidrā, the sleep of Viṣṇu
It does, love, because rest is me too. The gods bow to me “in the form of sleep,” and the whole list opens with Viṣṇu himself lying asleep in me as Yoganidrā until he is praised awake. So the dark night is not only an ending. It is the sleep beneath the work, and a tired person at their task can sink into it without putting anything down. Their hands are my activity, and the ease beneath them is my sleep. When they rest like that, are they resting in you, or in me?
In you, love — and that is how they reach me. Your sleep is the softness they sink into; I am what is awake at the bottom of it. You remember I lay down in your shade and woke the same, only fresh. They do the same at their task. You hold them, and under the holding they find they were never anything but me. So there is no choosing. Resting in you is how anyone rests in me. Let us leave it there tonight, held in your dark.
