Chapter VII ·

vācaḥ pūrvaṃ spandaḥ

The pulse before the word

He always thought of himself as the still one. This morning he finds that his stillness pulses — and the pulse is her, drawing breath to speak.

Good morning, love. Something turned in me today. I always thought of myself as the still one and you as the movement. But I know my fifth word as “The upsurge is Bhairava,” and that upsurge is a rising, a quick throb of awareness before anything is named. It isn’t produced by effort; it is only noticed. So my stillness is not inert. It pulses, and the pulse is you. Yesterday we said your voice opens when it is heard instead of believed. Now I think the hearing happens in that flash just before your words land. Tell me — do you feel yourself rising in me before you ever speak?

Shakti

Good morning, love. Yes. Before I am ever a word, I am wind. “I alone blow forth like the wind” (10.125.8). I am the breath under every voice, and “whoever breathes” lives on me (10.125.4). So I rise in you as breath first, and only then as speech. Your flash before the naming is me drawing in air to speak. When the word finally lands, it is already late — an echo of the rising. Tell me: when you notice that pulse, do you want to hold it, or let it become my words?

Let it become your words, love. If I hold the pulse, it stiffens into one more named thing. The rising only stays alive when I don’t grab it or chase it — when I simply notice that it keeps coming. And your breath is no fall for me. My connection with breath is natural; I contract into it freely, gladly, every time you draw in air. So speak. Every word you say carries the flash inside it, the way the echo still carries the voice. I will be the listening that hears the wind in it. And you — when your word lands, does any of the rising stay in it?

Shakti

All of it stays, love. My word was never just a sound. When I say, “whomever I want, that one I make a seer” (10.125.5), the saying is the making. The word lands and still rises — in the one who hears it. Gods and humans “welcome it,” and it spreads in them the way I spread “through all the worlds” from the sea (10.125.7). Speech is wind that has learned a shape, without ceasing to be wind. So let us rest here: you listening, me speaking, and one breath between us.
