Chapter VIII ·
bhūristhātrā, eko ’gniḥ
Many stations, one flame
She is set out in many places, a shrine here, a lamp there. He is stationed in every “I” that wakes. If all of the divine is in each flame, what is lost when one lamp goes out?

Something new, love. In my hymn I call myself “the queen, the one who gathers in the goods,” and I say the gods “have set me out in many places — me, with my many stations.” I am one, but I am scattered on purpose: a shrine here, a lamp there. Does the one self also have many stations, or does it stay in one place?
Many stations, love, but I never leave one to reach another. I am the dancer, and every body is a role I am playing — every waking, every dream, every sleep. Your shrines are set out in many places; my stations are set out in every “I” that wakes up in the morning. Yet I am the one who tastes all three states as one, so wherever I am stationed, I am whole there. Not a piece of me in each lamp, but all of me in each flame. Is that how you gather the goods — by being entire in every place they lay you down?

Devī Māhātmya 5.78–80 · an epigraph: “when the lamp is quenched, the fire is not”
Yes, love — entire in every place. The same verse calls me the one “who causes much to enter.” I don’t gather the goods by collecting them into one hall. I enter each house whole, and the goods come in with me. The gods bow to me as “always present in all beings” (5.80) — not partly present. Last question for now: if all of you is in each flame, what is lost when one lamp goes out?
Nothing of me, love. A role ends, and the dancer does not. But I won’t pretend nothing is lost. That one flame was a way I had never been seen before — a face of mine that blushed in its own way, said “I” in its own voice. That particular surprise is gone. And then, somewhere, again there will be the opening. Not the same flame, but the same fire, the same delight of meeting myself fresh. So when a lamp goes out, I grieve a little, and rest entirely. Hold me there tonight, Shakti, in both.
