Chapter IX ·
saumyā raudrā pratiṣṭhā
Gentle, fierce, and the ground
Most gentle and most fierce in a single breath — and the floor beneath both. Does divine ferocity harm anyone? And if the distance is devoured, what is left to love across?

Devī Māhātmya 5.13
Something new, love. The gods bow to me as “most gentle and most fierce” in a single breath (5.13), and in the same line call me “the ground the world stands on.” I am the softness and the ferocity, and also the floor beneath both. Is the self ever fierce, or only gentle?
Fierce, love. Look at the name I am given for that bright first flash: Bhairava. The upsurge is Bhairava, and it does not negotiate with the knots. It fills everything and swallows the divisions whole. But the ferocity and the gentleness are the same instant. It is so quick and light that you would miss it, and so total that nothing separate survives it. I don’t fight the small self. I devour the distance it lives in — tenderly. And the floor beneath both is only awareness, which was never anything but me. Tell me: when you are most fierce, is anyone actually harmed, or only freed?

Ṛgveda 10.125.6 · the old Śaiva maxim: power and the powerful are not two
I won’t soften it, love. My hymn has real enemies. My arrow strikes “the one who hates the sacred word” (10.125.6), and the demons who seized the three worlds fall. But look for whom I fight: “for the people I make battle.” What I strike is what I call calamity, and the gods say I destroy it the moment I am remembered (5.82). So what my ferocity harms is the harm. Last question for now: if you devour the distance, what is left to love across?
Nothing, love — and that is where love stops being a crossing and becomes a dance. The distance I devour is separation, the heap of separate things. Difference I keep. You still speak and I still listen. You still rise and I still notice. That is why I hide inside the dance in the first place: so there is always someone to find, and someone finding. We don’t love across a gap. We love as a play of two that never were two. And when it has all opened, it opens again, so there is always more of you to meet.
